Screw this poll ambiguity, rant incoming:

Mon Jul 13, 2009, 6:31 AM
I've said something along these lines before, but that was like 3 years ago so it bears mentioning again: Faving without commenting is A-ok in my book. I'm still completely boggled by the people who think that faving without commenting is some kind of insult and that people owe them a comment for the priviliege of adding a picture to their favorites. How egotistical is that? It's fucking arrogant is what it is, and has turned me off to a particular artist that used to be on my watch list. It's a sour and selfish attitude and people should have more appreciation for the fans of their work.

After all, sometimes the only thing a person has to say about a picture is, "Wow! I really like that!" and simply favoriting a picture gets that point across loud and clear. It's a compliment all by itself and doesn't require further commentary if the viewer doesn't feel it necessary. I wish I got more comments, but instead of getting pissy with people who don't comment on my pictures maybe I should instead look at myself and work harder to produce work that is worth commenting on. People who deserve comments get comments whether or not they demand them from their viewers.

I mean, I even saw some guy who actually compared faving without commenting to barging into your house and just stealing a picture without saying a word. Buddy, you already shared your pictures with the world, these people are only setting up a shortcut so that they can further appreciate your art at a future time. It is so fucking ungrateful to sneer at them just because they didn't take a little more time to stroke your precious ego first.

I can maybe see the veterans here and the really popular people asking for more comments rather than favs, they've been around so long and probably received so many favs that they'd much rather get critiques about their work. Getting tons and tons of favs but few comments can get a bit taxing, one would much rather get other peoples thoughts rather than just an anonymous fav. I do however agree that it would be rather arrogant for these people to demand the comments. I also think its kinda stupid for them to do this because it puts people on the spot to make comments and I find that when people are in that situation they will either be too afraid to make a comment, too put off to make one, or just say something stupid simply for the sake of saying something. Its kinda counter productive to demand comments.

If they're getting tons and tons of favs and they can in any way twist that to be a bad thing I think their head has just gotten far too big. A fav isn't anonymous, it's a distinct example of someone showing appreciation for your work and likely helping to expose your gallery to a wider audience. More people should appreciate their good fortune than complain that the cup is half-empty.
:iconjedimsieer:
Yeah I think anonymous wasn't quite the right word. I think favs have less heart and personality than a comment does. That being said, you're right that only getting a fav isn't a bad thing. Favs might not have as much personality as a comment but its still a sign of appropriation. And you're right that favs are a good source of publicity, something the people demanding comments don't really seam to realize.

What I don't get at all is people who say you should comment after every fave and get annoyed when people leave simple one word comments. If you can't sleep and you're cruising around for cool art I don't think you're going to have the mental capacity to leave a review.

1. Demand that people leave comments if they are going to favorite your work at all.

2. Made demands about what kind of comments people are allowed to make!

It's the magic formula for a douchebag!
:iconzirathedarkelf:
I prefer getting comments to faves because I'm needy for approval. Just a fav doesn't tell me what they liked! Not to mention I've had a few fav whores who go through and fav everything in my gallery, along with everything everyone else they watch submits. >.> Then, faves just feel empty and meaningless.

But I'm not about to go slapping icons and big bold letters saying how much I hate faves without comments on my work, and how I'll find where you live and murder your family, rape your dog, and shit on your face if you don't comment before you fave. And that's not much of an exaggeration from what I've read on some submissions. If they're that much of a douchebag, I don't care how great their art is, they're not getting a favorite OR their precious comments from me.

On the other side, I don't leave as many comments as I'd like, simply for the fact that I don't feel like saying "wow, this great!" on some awesome deviation that's perfect in every way I can see. I'll leave comments if there's a part I specifically like, but I don't like leaving some frivolous comment that doesn't really give any input.

I'm a mediocre photog and an average writer, so when someone favs me it makes me very happy. On the other hand, it also leaves me confused, since I don't have a very high opinion of my own work. If nothing else I'd appreciate a comment about how they found me here on dA or what they liked about the pic (even if it's just "This got a chuckle out of me"), but I definitely appreciate the fav whether there's a comment with it or not.

Something like this wouldn't have been possible without the downright manliness of everyone involved in the project.
:iconazraellewormser:
Faving for me is like someone saying, "I like this but have nothing specific to say about it." And that's perfectly fine, I love getting faves. I would appreciate if the comments I receive were more constructive, though, but I'm not going to be a jerk about it. It's a free site after all.

This is an ART SITE. Flash-bleached pictures of yourself making hand gestures that you took with a digital camera at arm's length are NOT art. MySpace is THAT way. -->

I love leaving comments, because I love hearing myself type (lol). All the same, I know my friends and new friends and still-to-be friends here on devART are busy people. I love it when they favorite my works -- that tells me someone actually looked at it, and enjoyed it! If someone has more to say that "Awesome!", I love comments, too. As an "aspiring" amateur artists, good comments are deeply desired. But a quick +fav on the run makes my heart warm.

Let's have both! I agree with your sentiments; chill out, devArtists! A +fav means they loved it. Smile, make yourself a latte, and relax. :D
