So I got a friend to give me a critique of my latest drawing of Lin today, a picture I really like and feel quite proud of, but man, she tore it apart! Pointed out so many flaws and mistakes it made my head spin.
It was a really good critique. Humbling. I manage to not get defensive and offended anymore when people criticize my work ("Where's his thumbs?") but now it's kind of hard not to get depressed and discouraged. To have so many glaring errors and mistakes pointed out to me in excruciating detail reinforces that deep seated fear that No I'm Not Talented and I'm just running on borrowed luck that's going to run out fucking quickly if I don't shape the hell up. That there are many, MANY people out there who are far more capable, hard-working, and deserving of success than I am and that I'm just a pretender cheapstaking his way to success like that fucker Rob Liefeld.
Jesus Christ I don't want to be another Liefeld.
I need to do more practice drawing in my spare time. My anatomy still needs a lot of work and it's getting harder and harder to justify the way I draw faces. I'd love to be able to draw like [link] one day. I should get on with that.
We gained a dog the other day but lost a hippo. It was not a fair trade.

You've got a great unique style and your art has a lot of personality, something which a lot of the "great" artists tend to lack, turning their art into a huge snoozefest. Rodolphe's art is great, but in the end you shouldn't be aiming to draw like him but instead just aiming to be yourself, just with a bit more skill.
I'll admit, I'm glad to see you're not discouraged but instead more determined to improve yourself.
You've probably forgotten me, but you helped me a lot with my art when I was younger. I'll always remember you simply ripping apart a profile picture I did and criticising every tiny part harshly. As a 14 year old I should have broke down in tears but you ended up helping to improve my art so dramatically and I probably wouldn't be where I am now without your help (as well as a lot of other folk like Chan and stuff).
But yeah, Just thought I'd say it really. Just keep working at it and don't start with any self pity, you're a great artist and a great teacher and with a bit of hard work then you'll be the best.

This is an ART SITE. Flash-bleached pictures of yourself making hand gestures that you took with a digital camera at arm's length are NOT art. MySpace is THAT way. -->

You might not be where you want to be, but I'd give my left arm for that level of skill.

Personally, I enjoy your present style. Mostly because it's NOT obviously based on another popular style or artist's body of work. If you're dissatisfied with your work, then you should change it for you because YOU want to change it, not because someone criticised you. If every person took every criticism they ever received to heart, nothing would ever get done because no one can ever please everyone. And even if we could, would that really make us happy?
Most people now try to justify themselves by saying that they're just trying to pay the bills and mimic other artists' work because they know that that's what sells. It's the same in fashion and cinema and any other type of art you can think of. The true test comes when people are trying to mimic you because of the style that you've developed through your personal growth and gradual inspiration from outside sources.
You don't know me, so my opinion may not hold much weight with you, but I do enjoy your style and look forward to your updates.
